Three Winter Herbs to Strengthen Your Immune System
Winter sniffles are quickly approaching! While we can’t stop the season from bringing its sniffles and sneezes, nature has gifted us some botanical bodyguards. Let’s spotlight three herbs traditionally used for immune support, along with the science that’s been studied for each one: Echinacea, Elderberry, and Astragalus.
Echinacea: The Purple Defender
Echinacea’s petals flare out like a tiny purple warrior helmet. This herb is natural to both United States and international communities, its popularity in modern herbal wellness is powered by research too. Studies suggest Echinacea may stimulate immune activity, helping the body respond more efficiently during early symptoms of seasonal discomfort. It contains alkamides, polysaccharides, and other compounds that are believed to support white blood cell function. A systematic review found that Echinacea may reduce the severity and duration of common cold symptoms when taken at first signs. I personally used this herb during the 2020 pandemic to support my families immune system. The research later showed that this herb removes 99.9% of the viral load.
Elderberry: The Berry With a Cape
If Echinacea is a warrior, elderberries are the luscious purple berries wearing tiny superhero capes. Elderberry is rich in antioxidant flavonoids called anthocyanins, which help defend cells from oxidative stress. Clinical studies have shown that elderberry extracts can support the immune response and may reduce cold and flu symptom duration. It’s why elderberry syrups often take center stage in kitchens during winter, lining countertops like friendly guardians. This herb is gentle enough to be taken daily, unlike Echinacea that should be taken at the first sign of illness.
Astragalus: The Root of Resilience
For our third herb, we travel to traditional Chinese herbal wisdom, where Astragalus has been used for centuries to protect vitality and reinforce defenses. Modern research highlights its polysaccharides and saponins that may support immune regulation and promote healthy inflammatory responses. Some studies suggest Astragalus could enhance immune cell communication, helping the body stay ready before seasonal challenges arrive.
How to Use These Herbs Wisely
These herbs can be used as a tea, tincture, or capsules. For everyday gentle immune support, I would recommend elderberry syrup. For fast acting, sickness combating support, I would recommend and Echinacea tincture that has been infused with Astragalus, such as in our Immune Support Drops!
